S. Korea Sees Decline in Industrial Accidents Fatalities

(MENAFN) Fatalities from industrial accidents in South Korea declined in the first half of 2025, a shift attributed to stricter enforcement of workplace safety laws, according to government data released Thursday.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor reported 287 work-related deaths from January to June, marking a 3.0% decrease compared to the same period in 2024.

Officials credited the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, which has been in effect since January 2022, for the decline. The law mandates prison sentences or fines for business owners who fail to prevent major workplace accidents.

The government anticipates a further reduction in the second half of the year. President Lee Jae-myung's administration has pledged “all-out efforts” to drastically cut industrial accident rates.

Despite the overall decline, certain sectors saw increases. The construction industry recorded 138 fatalities, up 6.2% year-over-year. In contrast, manufacturing deaths dropped sharply by 29.5%, falling to 67. Other industries combined reported 82 fatalities — a 15.5% rise.

Workplace size also played a role. Deaths at companies with fewer than 50 employees surged 13.5% to 176. Conversely, fatalities at larger workplaces — those with over 50 employees — fell 21.3%, totaling 111.
