1.7M Afghans Head Back Home from Iran, Pakistan

(MENAFN) Since the start of this year, 1.7 million Afghan citizens have returned from Iran and Pakistan, according to the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, indicated that most returnees have limited connections to local communities and are struggling to find shelter and economic opportunities. At the same time, host communities are facing shortages of essential services and resources.

In response, the UN Central Emergency Response Fund has released $10 million, with additional support expected from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund to address growing needs.

The humanitarian outlook is expected to worsen as Pakistan's government has set a September 1 deadline for holders of Afghan Proof of Registration (PoR) cards to leave the country. Aid agencies are preparing for a new influx of returnees.

Data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) shows that over half of Afghanistan’s population requires critical assistance, with women and girls among the most vulnerable groups. The Afghanistan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for this year has received only 25 percent of its $2.4 billion funding target, with $624 million currently secured.

This situation highlights the urgent need for increased international support as Afghanistan faces a deepening humanitarian emergency.
