Fed Governor Rejects Trump’s Demand to Resign
(MENAFN) US Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook announced late Wednesday that she plans to retain her role at the central bank, despite growing pressure from President Donald Trump, who has demanded her resignation due to allegations of mortgage fraud.
In a statement shared via email and disseminated through a Federal Reserve representative, a news agency reported Cook as saying, “I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet.”
She emphasized her commitment to addressing any concerns about her financial history, adding, “I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve, and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.”
These remarks follow recent developments involving Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte, who called on US Attorney General Pam Bondi to initiate a probe into Cook’s involvement with two mortgage arrangements.
According to a report by the news agency, which surfaced Tuesday evening, Trump took to social media early Wednesday to demand Cook’s resignation.
In a letter dated August 15 addressed to Bondi and Justice Department official Ed Martin, Pulte asserted that Cook might have violated the law by allegedly “falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statute.”
At present, no formal accusations have been made against Cook, and it remains unclear whether Bondi will move forward with an inquiry.
Responding to Cook’s statement, Pulte reiterated his stance on the matter, posting on the social platform X: “Write anything you or your attorneys want Miss Cook, you’ve been caught based on mortgage documents, not a tweet.”
