Iran’s FM states IAEA inspectors could resume visiting Iranian nuclear sites

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated on Wednesday that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors could resume visits to Iranian nuclear sites only with authorization from the country’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

His comments, given in an interview with Iran’s official news agency, came amid a halt in cooperation between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog following parliamentary legislation passed in late June.

Araghchi emphasized that Iran cannot entirely suspend its collaboration with the IAEA, noting that the upcoming fuel replacement at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant will require the presence of inspectors.

He added that any IAEA requests to inspect nuclear facilities not recently targeted by Israel or the United States will be submitted to the SNSC for conditional approval.

The minister reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty while reserving the right to withdraw if deemed necessary. He also indicated the possibility of sending diplomats to Vienna for further talks with the IAEA following negotiations held in Tehran on Aug. 11.

Regarding warnings from France, Britain, and Germany—collectively the E3—about activating the snapback mechanism, Araghchi asserted that the E3 have effectively forfeited this right by withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal in practice.

He noted that Iran and the E3 have yet to establish a framework for resuming talks but could meet in the coming days to address the matter. On negotiations with the United States, he said the timing is not yet right for productive discussions.
