Lavrov Demands Urgent Restart of Israel-Palestine Talks
Speaking at a Moscow press briefing after meeting Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al Safadi, Lavrov emphasized that prioritizing dialogue must be the focus for any nation genuinely invested in peace.
“What needs to be done by Jordan, Russia, and other nations sincerely interested in achieving lasting peace is to push for an urgent return to direct talks,” he said.
Lavrov stressed the critical role of establishing a Palestinian state as a cornerstone of these talks, warning that without it, the region remains vulnerable to ongoing unrest.
“Violent protests, including armed resistance, won’t simply disappear. We need to acknowledge this openly,” he added.
In related developments, the Palestinian group Hamas reportedly gave its conditional approval through intermediaries to a ceasefire proposal concerning Gaza.
According to Egyptian media reports, Hamas agreed to release half of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza over a 60-day ceasefire, in exchange for the release of selected Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire deal also involves the withdrawal of Israeli forces to border zones around Gaza, allowing unhindered humanitarian aid access. Following this, both sides are expected to begin talks aimed at securing a lasting truce and broader peace agreement.
