China Accuses New Zealand’s Intelligence Community of Spreading Lies
(MENAFN) China has issued a sharp rebuke to New Zealand’s intelligence community, accusing it of spreading falsehoods and damaging bilateral relations, according to comments made Thursday by a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson.
During a regular press briefing, spokesperson Mao Ning responded to a recent report from New Zealand’s Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) that labeled China as the foremost foreign actor involved in interference operations within New Zealand.
Mao stated that in recent years, the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service has consistently disseminated false information, unjustly accused and targeted China, misrepresented routine friendly interactions between different sectors of both nations, and subjected Chinese individuals in New Zealand to harassment and intimidation — actions she said reflect the agency's ideological prejudice and a lingering Cold War mindset.
“This does no good to mutual trust and runs counter to the two countries' consensus of enhancing people-to-people and cultural exchanges,” she said. “China deplores and opposes it.”
“We urge relevant agency in New Zealand to stop spreading lies, stop creating misperception, and contribute more to people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries and the sound and steady development of bilateral relations,” Mao added.
