Trump Speaks with Putin After White House Talks
Trump stated the conversation with Putin occurred after his August 18 meetings in Washington with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and key European officials. He indicated that while security arrangements for Ukraine remain unresolved, European nations are expected to lead the effort, with the U.S. positioned to support.
"We have not even discussed the specifics of it," Trump said. "Europe is going to give them significant security guarantees, and they should, because they are right there, but we will be involved from the standpoint of backup to help them."
In a separate disclosure, Trump said he and Putin met in Alaska on August 15, where they discussed potential nuclear arms reductions — but only after the conflict in Ukraine comes to a close.
