Heavy Rainfall Prompts Flood Warnings in Beijing
(MENAFN) Authorities in Beijing triggered a city-wide Level-III emergency response for flood control at noon on Tuesday, anticipating severe rainfall from Tuesday night through Wednesday.
The Beijing Meteorological Observatory has warned that some areas could experience up to 70 mm of rain within six hours, or more than 100 mm within a 24-hour period.
An orange alert—the third-highest level in China’s color-coded weather system—has been issued for seven districts, while red alerts have been activated for the suburban regions of Mentougou and Fangshan, where torrential rains may spark flash floods.
In a joint announcement, the city's water and meteorological authorities also issued yellow warnings for potential waterlogging and mountain torrents. Urban areas are at high risk of waterlogging starting at 11 p.m. Tuesday, while the districts of Fangshan, Mentougou, Changping, and Yanqing face a greater threat of mountain torrents.
Flood control officials have urged residents to minimize travel, avoid rivers and mountainous regions, and steer clear of low-lying areas or places under bridges to reduce the risk of flooding.
China's weather warning system ranks alerts on a four-tier scale, with red being the most severe, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
