Spain Activates Emergency Support for Wildfire-Affected Zones

(MENAFN) The Spanish government on Tuesday officially designated regions impacted by recent wildfires as catastrophe zones, unlocking access to urgent emergency relief.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska announced the decision during a press briefing aired on a national broadcaster, confirming the designation covers all areas affected by the 113 wildfires reported between June 23 and August 25.

"We are facing one of the worst environmental crises in recent years," Grande-Marlaska said, emphasizing that residents in these zones are now eligible to apply for compensation. The relief package also extends to communities struck by severe flooding at June’s end.

Government support will target households, businesses, and local governments, alongside compensation for farmers who suffered losses in crops, forests, and livestock. The plan includes funding for infrastructure repairs and offers preferential loan options to aid recovery efforts.

According to the European Forest Fire Information Service, wildfires have burned roughly 418,000 hectares across Spain this summer, an area larger than the island of Mallorca. Nonetheless, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska noted that it remains premature to provide a definitive evaluation of the overall damage.

Currently, 15 wildfires remain active in northwest Spain, predominantly in Zamora and Ourense provinces. Despite recent drops in temperature, firefighting operations continue to face challenges due to persistent strong winds.
