2025 Wildfires Scorch Over 2M Acres Across Europe
The continent is experiencing unprecedented wildfire activity in 2025, driven by a severe heat wave, pushing the total area burned to the highest level since EFFIS began official record-keeping in 2006.
August emerged as the most devastating month, with Spain and Portugal facing numerous intense fires. Data reveals a sharp surge in burned land across Spain starting in August, totaling roughly 400,000 hectares (about 988,400 acres).
Portugal has similarly seen a dramatic rise, with around 270,000 hectares (approximately 667,700 acres) consumed by flames this year, fueled by the same August heatwave.
In tandem with the widespread blazes, Europe’s carbon dioxide emissions linked to wildfires have climbed significantly, reaching 38 million tons during the wildfire season.
