Japanese Centenarian Sets Record Climbing Mount Fuji

(MENAFN) A 102-year-old man from Japan has set a new benchmark by becoming the most senior individual ever to scale Mount Fuji, as officially recognized by Guinness World Records.

Kokichi Akuzawa achieved this impressive feat on August 3, reaching the summit of Japan’s tallest mountain, which rises to 3,776 meters (12,388 feet).

This accomplishment followed his recovery from a bout of heart failure, according to an announcement posted on the Guinness World Records website.

Mount Fuji, a prominent and active stratovolcano, is situated on the Japanese island of Honshu.

Despite its challenging terrain, Kokichi remains an avid climber, reportedly hiking mountainous routes nearly every week.

This remarkable ascent was not Kokichi’s first encounter with Mount Fuji in his advanced years.

He had previously reached its peak at the age of 96. However, he shared that this recent expedition felt “a lot different from the last time.”

Unlike his earlier climb, which he completed in just one day, this time it took him three days to reach the top.

He paused to rest in mountain huts on two nights during the journey.

When asked whether he would attempt the climb again, Kokichi humorously replied, “Never again.”

However, he added with a hint of uncertainty, “If you ask me next year, maybe you'll get a different answer, but for now, I'm happy with that climb.”

Before this record-breaking accomplishment, Kokichi had marked his 99th birthday by ascending the 1,272-meter (4,173-foot) Nabewariyama mountain summit.
