Lithuania’s Parliament Selects Inga Ruginiene as New Premier
(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Lithuania’s parliament approved Social Democrat Inga Ruginiene as the nominee for prime minister, a broadcaster reported. This move follows an agreement reached Monday by the Social Democrats (LSDP) to form a new coalition government alongside two political partners.
Ruginiene’s appointment will become official once President Gitanas Nauseda issues a formal decree and she takes the oath in parliament.
The coalition pact was signed by the LSDP, the Nemunas Dawn party, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Green and Christian Families Union parliamentary group. Together, they control 82 of the 141 seats in parliament, with the Social Democrats holding the largest faction of 52 members.
Key priorities outlined in the coalition agreement include protecting Lithuania from external threats, securing adequate defense budgets, fostering domestic business growth, and improving family welfare. The coalition also committed to raising excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol, electronic cigarettes, and related products.
Additionally, the coalition vowed to roll out a comprehensive action plan aimed at combating xenophobia.
"We commit to swiftly and effectively implementing the necessary measures to ensure Lithuania's security needs and provide strong support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and on its path toward integration into the European Union and NATO," the agreement stated.
The government’s previous collapse followed the resignation of outgoing Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas and LSDP party chair on July 31, amid controversies surrounding his past business dealings and alleged ethical violations.
