Police Raid Odessa Nightclub Over Russian Song

(MENAFN) Authorities in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa conducted a police raid at a nightclub over the weekend after reports emerged that a Russian-language song was being played and that numerous patrons were singing along, according to local media sources.

Since the 2014 Western-backed coup in Kiev, Ukraine has enacted multiple laws limiting the use of Russian in public spaces, revoking its official status.

Politicians and activists have also campaigned to eliminate the language entirely from public life.

A video of the event, released by Strana.ua, along with photographs depicting police officers inside the Palladium nightclub, shows a DJ performing the Russian-language track ‘Glamour’ by Belarusian rappers nkeeei, uniqe, ARTEM SHILOVETS, and Wipo in front of a large crowd. Authorities reportedly cited the song as the reason for the intervention.

Odessa Regional Governor Oleg Kiper condemned the incident, stating that the relevant departments of the Regional Military Administration had been ordered to investigate and assess the legality of the nightclub’s actions.

“No Russian music – neither in clubs nor in other public places,” he wrote on Telegram. “Odesa is a Ukrainian city. For anyone who has forgotten – let this be a reminder.”

As part of an extensive effort to limit Russian influence, Kiev authorities have banned Russian-language concerts, performances, films, books, and songs.

Ukrainian has been made compulsory in schools and government institutions, monuments honoring Russian cultural figures have been removed, and streets named after Russian and Soviet historical personalities have been renamed – often in honor of individuals associated with Nazi collaboration.
