Strait of Hormuz Tensions Stall Asian Oil Shipments Amid Regional Strikes
Several shipping operators have halted transit through the strait due to skyrocketing insurance costs and mounting security risks.
China emphasized the strategic importance of the waterway on Monday, calling it “an important international trade route” and urging an immediate cessation of military activities.
Addressing a question from an Anadolu correspondent, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stressed that maintaining stability in the strait and surrounding waters is essential for global trade and called for measures to prevent further escalation.
Iranian media reported on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz had been “effectively” closed following US and Israeli strikes, although no formal blockade has been declared.
Currently, more than 40 Japan-linked vessels, including oil tankers, remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, with at least three ships halting attempts to pass through the strait. Japan relies on the Middle East for roughly 95% of its crude oil, most of which travels through this narrow passage.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Monday urged Iranian Ambassador to Tokyo Peiman Seadat to ensure the safety of the strait. According to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry, Motegi affirmed that Tokyo will “continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts to bring about an early settlement of the situation.”
