Three Get Killed, Fourteen Harmed in Downtown Austin Shooting

(MENAFN) Three people were killed and 14 others wounded in a mass shooting early Sunday in downtown Austin, Texas, after a gunman opened fire near a nightlife area before being fatally shot by police.

Authorities said the suspect drove an SUV around the area multiple times before firing a handgun from inside the vehicle at people gathered outside a bar. He then exited the SUV and continued shooting with a rifle along Sixth Street until officers confronted and shot him dead.

Austin-Travis County EMS reported that three victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while 14 others were taken to nearby hospitals, including three in critical condition. Emergency responders arrived less than a minute after the first call.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has joined the probe and stated that it is too early to determine a motive, though investigators are reviewing a possible connection to terrorism.

According to CBS News, the suspect was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne. The outlet reported that he was wearing clothing during the attack that included a shirt resembling the Iranian flag and a sweatshirt bearing the phrase “Property of Allah.” Authorities have not yet confirmed whether these details are linked to a specific motive.
