Spain’s PM Calls on EU to “Not Allow a 'New Gaza' in Lebanon
In a nationally televised address, Sanchez framed the warning in stark, urgent terms — arguing that Europe's credibility on the world stage depends on its willingness to hold all parties to the same legal and moral standards.
"Let us not allow a 'new Gaza' in Lebanon, because in the face of flagrant violations of international humanitarian law, Europe must act consistently," Sanchez said.
The Spanish premier drew a direct line between the EU's stance on Israel and its broader global standing, particularly in relation to European support for Ukraine.
"If we also want the rest of the world to look up to us and to support us in the backing we are giving to Ukraine in its struggle for freedom," Sanchez added, calling on Brussels to apply uniform standards across all international conflicts without exception.
Sanchez renewed his longstanding push for the suspension of the EU's association agreement with Tel Aviv — a bilateral treaty signed in 1995 that governs trade relations and political cooperation between the bloc and Israel — arguing that continued enforcement of the pact is incompatible with Europe's proclaimed values.
Earlier in the week, the prime minister took to X — the social media platform owned by US billionaire Elon Musk — to demand that Lebanon be fully incorporated into the ceasefire framework recently brokered between Iran and the United States.
Sanchez closed his remarks with a call for legal accountability, leaving no ambiguity about his position on those responsible for civilian harm.
"There must be no impunity for these criminal acts," he said.
