WHO Reports 7 Andes Virus Hantavirus Cases on Cruise Ship

(MENAFN) The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed seven cases of Andes virus hantavirus infection among passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, as the total number of symptomatic cases climbs to nine — including three fatalities.

Olivier Le Polain, head of the WHO's Epidemiology & Analytics for Response (EAR), disclosed the updated figures during a live social media address held in Geneva, noting that the latest case involved a French passenger evacuated from the MV Hondius on Sunday who subsequently tested positive for the virus.

The WHO had previously sounded the alarm on Saturday, reporting that as of May 8, eight symptomatic cases had been recorded aboard the vessel, three of which proved fatal.

The Andes virus is a rodent-borne pathogen endemic to South America and holds the grim distinction of being the only known hantavirus with a confirmed capacity for limited human-to-human transmission — a characteristic that has heightened public health concern surrounding the outbreak.
