US Reports Major Maritime Enforcement Action in Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) The United States announced Saturday that it has redirected 100 commercial vessels and disabled four others as part of an ongoing maritime enforcement campaign targeting ships linked to Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation has involved more than 15,000 personnel across the military, including soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen, over the past six weeks. Officials said the force has also allowed 26 humanitarian aid vessels to pass through during the same period, as stated in a post on X.
The campaign, which began on April 13, targets commercial shipping entering and exiting Iranian ports, including those along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Authorities said the enforcement applies to vessels of all nationalities operating in or near Iranian coastal waters.
US officials noted that more than 200 aircraft and naval assets are supporting the operation, including major carrier strike groups, amphibious units, and multiple guided-missile destroyers.
Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, said the operation has been highly effective.
"Our service members are doing extraordinary work," said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. "They have been highly effective by executing the mission with precision and professionalism, allowing zero trade into and out of Iranian ports, which has squeezed Iran economically."
