Africa CDC Warns Ten Nations at Risk After Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo

(MENAFN) The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has warned that ten African countries are now considered “at risk” of Ebola virus disease transmission following a new outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to a Saturday briefing.

The countries identified include Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Zambia. Africa CDC Director Jean Kaseya said the alert reflects growing concerns over cross-border spread, particularly in nations neighboring the outbreak zone.

Most of the listed countries share borders with either the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Uganda, where Ebola cases have already been reported, increasing the risk of regional transmission.

The Africa CDC and the World Health Organization also launched a joint funding appeal exceeding $314 million to support response efforts, including surveillance, treatment, and prevention measures.

Authorities said the majority of funding would be directed toward the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, while a smaller portion would be allocated to the ten high-risk countries for preparedness and coordination.

Planned interventions include strengthening national emergency response systems, improving cross-border coordination, accelerating vaccine research for the Bundibugyo strain, deploying rapid response teams, and pre-positioning medical supplies to prevent further spread.
