(MENAFN) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in India on Monday for a two day official trip, according to reports. His first stop was Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day.

“India and Germany are celebrating 75 years of India-Germany diplomatic ties and 25 years of the India-Germany strategic partnership,” a Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted, adding that the meeting with Modi “will further strengthen India-Germany partnership.”

This marks Merz’s inaugural visit to India as chancellor, taking place from January 12–13.

According to statements from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, discussions will center on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, technology, education, skills development, and mobility. Expanding collaboration in defense and security is also on the agenda.
