EU Expresses Solidarity with UAE After Reported Missile, Drone Attacks
(MENAFN) The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed “full solidarity” with the United Arab Emirates on Monday following reported waves of missile and drone attacks attributed to Iran, despite an existing ceasefire framework between Tehran and Washington, according to reports.
In a message posted on social media, she said the UAE had once again been targeted by what she described as “vicious missiles and drone attacks,” extending support to UAE leadership, its population, and regional partners.
She also characterized the attacks as unacceptable and described them as a violation of sovereignty and international law. Von der Leyen further noted that instability in the region has wider implications, including for Europe, and emphasized continued cooperation with partners to pursue de-escalation and diplomatic solutions.
Earlier on Monday, a fire broke out at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, an important energy facility on the UAE’s eastern coast, after it was struck by a drone reportedly launched from Iran. The incident is part of a broader pattern of regional escalation reported in recent weeks.
Tensions in the region have increased following earlier military strikes involving the US and Israel against Iran in late February, which triggered retaliatory actions affecting multiple Gulf states and disrupted maritime security in key waterways.
A ceasefire was established in early April through mediation efforts, though subsequent talks did not produce a long-term agreement. The arrangement was later extended without a fixed deadline, according to reports.
