OpenAI Publishes AI Mathematics Research for Public Review
The collection was released Tuesday on GitHub and includes 722 manuscripts organized into 372 groups of connected results. The groups may contain primary findings along with supporting arguments and alternative approaches to proving the same mathematical claims.
The AI system tackled around 4,000 research problems during its testing phase, according to the company.
OpenAI said the findings included in the collection are at varying stages of verification, meaning not all of the mathematical results have undergone the same level of review.
For a substantial portion of the work, the company also provided proofs written in Lean, a programming language designed to allow computers to verify whether mathematical reasoning is logically valid. Additional formal proofs are expected to be added as they become available.
The company also released 10 summaries explaining the model’s reasoning and provided estimates of the computational resources used to produce the results. OpenAI said an average result consumed computing resources comparable to about three hours of ChatGPT Pro “thinking.”
OpenAI said it sought guidance from the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study regarding how the research should be presented and made available.
"This is an important event for mathematics, with consequences both for mathematics and for the mathematical community that extend far beyond the individual results," the group said, stressing its advisory role did not amount to an endorsement of the results.
