Madrid Police Dismantle Housing Protest Camp in Puerta Del Sol
National Police personnel launched the removal operation in the morning, taking 334 people away from the encampment.
Two protesters were detained on suspicion of disobeying police orders and resisting arrest. Authorities said the operation proceeded without significant disruption or violent incidents.
A total of 220 National Police officers and 180 municipal police personnel took part, supported by firefighters and social services teams.
Following the clearance, municipal emergency sanitation crews began collecting tents, tarpaulins and other materials left behind in the square, working under police supervision.
The removal followed an announcement on Saturday by several protest organizing committees that they would leave the site.
In the days before the operation, Madrid's Government Delegation had issued two notices calling on demonstrators to dismantle the camp. Officials argued that protesters had already been allowed to exercise their right to freedom of assembly for an adequate period.
The government representative's office characterized the eviction as a "last resort," pointing to incidents that had affected both demonstrators and the surrounding area.
